Former catering and hospitality student has ambitions to run her own restaurant


Daniela Lunga studied at Leeds City College between 2013 and 2016. During this time, she completed courses in cake decoration, bakery, patisserie, hospitality service and professional cookery. The 20 year old runs her own online business, baking and selling sweet treats for all occasions. We caught up with her to find out more.

Where does your interest in bakery come from?

“During high school, I always knew what I wanted to do. I come from a family of enthusiastic bakers and my mum and aunties used to have their own business. When I was younger, I would help out with decorating and baking. My passion developed from there and I have never looked back since.”

What made you choose Leeds City College?

“Whilst I was at high school, I did some research into the best places to study catering and Leeds City College was an obvious choice. I was impressed by the industry standard facilities available, expertise of the tutors and professional environment of classes.”

What do you do now?

“I have been working at the Marriott hotel in Leeds after I won a cooking competition a few years ago. I was offered a job as a chef, which was a fantastic experience that developed my skills and confidence.

“I now look after my business and I will be studying a foundation degree at the college’s University Centre in September, followed by a top up at Leeds Beckett University in 2018. I’m hoping to learn how to run my own events and grow my business.”

How has Leeds City College helped you get to where you are now?

“The help and support received from my tutors has been phenomenal. I learnt so much from their experience that I will undoubtedly use throughout my career. My patisserie tutor, Fabrice, was like a father to me. He nurtured my skills, helped me to grow and was always on hand to assist and encourage me.

“During my time at college, I also took part in invaluable work placements in Spain and Germany where I learnt new techniques and immersed myself in different cultures.”

What are your plans for the future?

“My aim is to run my own little bakery or café in the near future but my ultimate dream is to open a restaurant.”
