Recruitment Information
Leeds City College celebrates diversity. We actively welcome applications from all sections of the community. All candidates will be treated fairly irrespective of race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, religion and belief or age.
We are committed to safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults, therefore all successful applicants are required to complete an enhanced DBS check.
The statutory guidance from the Department for Education encourages schools and colleges to create a safe recruitment process adopting recruitment procedures that carry out the appropriate checks.
Teacher prohibition orders prevent a person from carrying out teaching work in schools, sixth form colleges, 16 to 19 academies, relevant youth accommodation and children’s homes in England. A person who is prohibited from teaching must not be appointed to work as a teacher in such a setting.
Prohibition order checks for all applicants. The college application form requests a teaching reference number. For those that do not hold a teaching reference number but are eligible to apply for a post, a prohibition check will be carried out using the teacher service system lists.
Section 128 direction
A section 128 direction prohibits or restricts a person from taking part in the management of an independent school, including academies and free schools. A prohibited person is unable to participate in any management of an independent school such as:
- A management position in an independent school, academy or free school.
- A trustee of an academy or free school trust.
- A governor or member of a proprietor body for an independent school.
- A governor on any governing body in an independent school, academy or free school that retains or has been delegated any management responsibilities.
- The Department for Education guidance, keeping children safe in education – statutory guidance for schools and colleges states that, “where the person will be engaging in regulated activity, a DBS barred list check will also identify any section 128 discretion.”
It is normal recruitment practice for the college to carry out a DBS barred list check for all employees (including management, trustees and governors) therefore any section 128 discretion will be identified here within.
Equality and Diversity
Leeds City College is proud to be Investors in Diversity accredited.
The college is committed to equality of opportunity, ensuring everyone is treated fairly regardless of age, disability, gender, race or any other protected characteristic. We operate an anonymous shortlisting process whereby no personal details are visible to the panel members who review the application forms, so that candidates are assessed on their skills and experience in a fair way.
We welcome those who wish to declare a disability to do so, as all personal details will be dealt with in a confidential manner. This information will only be available to HR and if you are invited for an interview, a member of HR will contact you to discuss any reasonable adjustments or special arrangements required to accommodate your needs.
The college provides a range of online training and workshops in relation to equality and diversity. We are continually looking to support and advise our workforce on emerging trends and priority topics both within the Yorkshire and Humberside region and across the country.
There are opportunities for individuals to join our staff equality forums; we currently have LGBT, disability and BME forums running across the college. These forums are a great way for people from a range of backgrounds to share experiences, support college priorities, raise awareness and help educate the wider workforce.
