Student profile: Fatawu Zakariah
Fatawu Zakariah had just graduated with a Masters degree in Pharmacy from Bradford University and started working at a local private community pharmacy, before realising his future was in education.
After graduation, Fatawu re-evaluated his situation and realised that he wanted a new career helping young people and it soon became apparent that teaching was the right choice for him. This is when he decided to come to Leeds City College and study the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training with a specialist pathway in numeracy.
Fatawu was glad to go back to further education and study towards his desired pathway. The course provided a good balance between theoretical knowledge and practice.
Fatawu said: “The course comprised of lectures, group study activities as well as tutorials that helped with assessment preparation and completion.
“It also provided an effective teaching practice placement across a number of sites, including other local colleges, which allowed me to get a real taste of teaching. I also received continued support and guidance from my college tutors and placement providers.
“Overall, I had a great experience at Leeds City College over the course of my teacher training period and would highly recommend the FE Direct Internship programme to future candidates. The staff are very dedicated, hardworking and were very supportive and encouraging throughout the journey.”
Fatawu is now working as a maths lecturer and loving every minute of it. His decision to change careers was certainly worthwhile.
