Hannah Blakey- Level 2 Certificate for Proficiency in Meat and Poultry Industry Skills
Hannah Blakey studies Level 2 Certificate for Proficiency in Meat and Poultry Industry Skills at Leeds City College.
Growing up on a farm her passion for Butchery was evident from an early age and through attending a Careers Fair at college she found the perfect course for her.
Hannah spends one day in college and during the rest of the week she works at Marley’s Butchers, where she has held a job for three and a half years.
The experience of being in college is enjoyable for Hannah as she can spend time with people her own age and she gains a lot of experience from her peers.
“I would recommend this course because you get so much out of it, I participate in competitions and it will be rewarding to have a qualification at the end of it.”
Her tutor is very encouraging of her work and attends every competition, helping her to feel prepared, which she greatly appreciates.
Hannah doesn’t come from a Butchery background but her family and friends are proud of the career path she is taking: “They all think it’s really cool, as I’m a girl in a male- orientated industry and they think it’s impressive.”
Balancing work and college doesn’t give Hannah much spare time to cook at home but when she does she loves to prepare and cook lamb.
This practice will be beneficial if she travels to New Zealand to gain experience, which is one of her ambitions. She would also like to open her own shop one day.
Hannah has a bright future ahead and she would encourage anyone in her position to make the most of college life and the facilities on offer.
