Abbey Mason – former apprentice
Thanks to an apprenticeship with Leeds City College, Abbey Mason has channelled her creative talent into an exciting role.
Abbey, 25, worked on one of the most anticipated events to hit the country - the Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2014 – as part of her job as Junior Marketing Executive at Welcome to Yorkshire.
It saw Abbey travel to Paris for the route announcement and work on a summer of key marketing events and activities including branding support and guidelines, two gala dinners and online marketing,.
Abbey was offered her current full-time position in October (2013), but prior to that a one-year apprenticeship with the College enabled her to gain relevant experience for the role.
On being made redundant from a previous job, the prospect of working alongside gaining a qualification attracted Abbey to the study option.
“With an apprenticeship you get experience in your field of interest at the same time as getting your qualification so it’s very beneficial in that way.”
Abbey found studying on the job straightforward; her tutor visited her workplace regularly and the qualification, a NVQ Level 2 in Marketing, was tailored to the job.
“The apprenticeship through Leeds City College gave me the initial skills and knowledge that I needed in order to kick start my working career,” she said.
On a day-to-day basis, Abbey enjoys putting her creative and organisational skills into practice, working on diverse projects from research to events and marketing campaigns while finding out about all the great places on her doorstep.
