Careers in the Computer Game Industry

Computer Games is a $100 Billion industry, and it is growing. There are hundreds of companies in the UK, from massive employers like Rockstar, to small independent teams made up of a handful of friends.

These companies need skilled workers. They need animators. Story writers. Artists, programmers, musicians, actors and 3D modellers. The skills involved in working on a game span the full range from fine art to management to computer science.

And yet many young people never realise that they could have a career in designing games. This session allows students to look at the various roles they could fulfil in an enjoyable and varied industry.

Computer Game Design - Maps, dice and monsters

The first step in making a computer game is not about having an idea. It’s not about writing a story. It’s about drawing the level on paper, rolling some dice and trying to play.

This session gives students some card, some dice and a pencil and then says, “Let’s make a game.” We’ll look at how to come up with rules and mechanics, how to design a fun level and - most importantly - how to screw it up and start again when it all goes horribly wrong.

Game designers like to fail and learn from their mistakes, and they like to do it as fast as they can. Let’s see how many mistakes we can make in one session. I mean games. How many games we can make.

Can Girls Even Make Computer Games?

Nearly half of all game players are female. But only 14% of people who make games are women. Why don’t the girls who play games want to make games?

Maybe they do want to make games. Perhaps they just need time to look at the opportunities in the games industry for artists, writers, programmers and animators. Perhaps they need chance to talk about the reasons they’ve not considered this as a career and the things that get in their way.

This session gives space for this conversation and tries to answer some of the questions young women might have about this amazing, diverse industry.
