Physical Education (PE) is an industry that is continually growing both locally and nationally, with over 200 schools and other education establishments employing physical education teachers within the Leeds district alone.

This exciting programme has been developed with input from current physical education teachers, primary and high school headmasters and self-employed school orientated coaches. It develops your knowledge in coaching practice, physical education, inclusive physical education, and learning the policies and practices of a physical education teacher.

During the course you will be required to complete a range of work placements within local schools or with local sports teams as part of the Work Related Learning module. You will plan and deliver practical coaching sessions and classroom based lessons.

The course offers places for students to undertake their work placement abroad at a variety of schools in Orebro, Sweden, working in both primary and secondary education, whilst leading sporting activities. This will provide you with valuable industry experience, networking opportunities and industry recognised qualifications.

During the course you may have the chance to undertake a work placement abroad, work closely with local schools and government bodies and achieve industry recognised qualifications to gain employment leading coaching sessions at schools, sports clubs and local authority centres.

How you will be assessed

The assessment strategy of the course consists mainly of coursework, work based placements and practical assessments as these will offer you the closest real-life experience to secure future employment. Examples of assessment methods used within the course are: Practical session with reflective essays, written reports, Industry simulations, presentations and Vivas.

The course lecturers will clearly explain the course content, interlinking the assessment methods and each assessments requirements. However, all of the information on assessments are provided within the course handbook, programme specification and each individual module handbook available to students after enrolment.

Where is the course delivered (facilities / classrooms)

This course will be delivered at the University Centre where students will have access to a HE-specific study zone, including computer facilities, and social area.


The Higher Education Sports department works in partnership with Firehouse Fitness gymnasium. All students enrolled onto the Sports Foundation Degree/Top-Up automatically receives gym membership to Firehouse Fitness for the academic year. This gives student fantastic access to some of the best facilities in Leeds.

Entry requirements

A typical offer is likely to be based on 2 x D grades at A level or a Merit profile in a relevant BTEC National Diploma.

It is expected that students will have at least 4 GCSE grades at C or above including English or equivalent. Students who do not have GCSE grade Cs in Maths and English may need these to progress to Top Up degree programmes and will be given the opportunity to gain these alongside their study.

International qualifications will be assessed against these criteria. Speakers of other languages need to have an IELTS score of at least 6.0 or a recognised level 2 English qualification

Students will be subject to the DBS (Disclosure of Barring Services) process in which a clean DBS will be required. 

Offers will be made to applicants who can evidence a significant amount of practical experience within voluntary or paid positions. We welcome applications from mature candidates who may not have met the academic criteria, but can demonstrate a wealth of experience in their chosen field.

The course structure actively supports those students who can evidence sufficient employment or voluntary experience to claim for Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL).

Optional expenses whilst on the course may include:

The professionally branded sport kit will include the main items that will set you up for practical sessions, gym workouts and work placements undertaken whilst you are on the programme. This will include:

  • Training T-Shirt
  • Training Pants
  • Hoodie
  • ¼ Zip Jumper

All items that are included in the kit will be branded with the University Centre/HE Sport logo and it is an anticipated that all students purchase the sports kit to facilitate practical lessons and maintain a professional image when on work placements in the UK or in the EU.

Students will need to undergo an enhanced DBS check due to the work placement element of this course, which will be funded by the department. However, you may wish to pay for a yearly subscription to the DBS Update Service which will allow you to keep your DBS certificate up to date and allow employers to check online that the document is still current or if any additional information has been added since its issue.

What's next

On successful completion of the foundation degree, you can apply to progress onto the BA (Honours) Top-Up Degree in various disciplines including Sports Studies, Sport Coaching and Physical Education.

It is expected that graduates will find employment in a range of physical education teaching or sport coaching roles including; Primary, Secondary or further education PE Teacher, afterschool sports coach, Coaching award assessor, youth sports coach within the community and adult sports coach in the community.

Additionally, graduates have the opportunity continue onto further study such as: Post Graduate Certificate in Education, Masters degree and potentially a PhD.
