The new Foundation Degree in Sport Performance is a programme which has been developed in accordance with requirements of the sport performance industry.

The programme has been developed by a range of sport performance experts from areas such as; performance physiology, sport nutrition, sport and exercise psychology and strength and conditioning. The programme aims to provide you with a wealth of experience, knowledge and skills so you graduate as a multidisciplinary practitioner.

You will be required to complete a work placement as part of the work related learning module, as well as for required elements of the maximising performance and strength and conditioning modules. There may also be the opportunity to undertake some work placements overseas with our partners in Sweden, Finland and Austria. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable industry experience, networking opportunities and a chance to apply academic study in a professional environment.

Furthermore, you will receive encouragement from the programme team to gain experience, knowledge and skills in areas such as; sport performance nutrition, sport science support and strength and conditioning.

What you learn

How you will be assessed

The assessment process is an essential element of the programme design.

The assessment methods are varied to support and enhance the module design and structure.

The tasks and assessment criteria are clearly explained to the students in the module handbooks, with the tutors explaining the outcomes and methods to the students for clarity.

Formative feedback is integral to the teaching, learning and assessment strategy of the course.

Where is the course delivered (facilities / classrooms)

This course will be delivered at the University Centre where students will have access to a HE-specific study zone, including computer facilities, and social area.



The Higher Education Sports department works in partnership with Firehouse Fitness gymnasium. All students enrolled onto the Sports Foundation Degree/Top-Up automatically receives gym membership to Firehouse Fitness for the academic year. This gives student fantastic access to some of the best facilities in Leeds.

Entry requirements

A typical offer is likely to be based on 2 x D grades at A level or a Merit profile in a relevant BTEC National Diploma.

It is expected that students will have at least 4 GCSE grades at C or above including English or equivalent. Students who do not have GCSE grade Cs in Maths and English may need these to progress to Top Up degree programmes and will be given the opportunity to gain these alongside their study.

International qualifications will be assessed against these criteria. Speakers of other languages need to have an IELTS score of at least 6.0 or a recognised level 2 English qualification

Students will be subject to the DBS (Disclosure of Barring Services) process in which a clean DBS will be required. 

Offers will be made to applicants who can evidence a significant amount of practical experience within voluntary or paid positions. We welcome applications from mature candidates who may not have met the academic criteria, but can demonstrate a wealth of experience in their chosen field.

The course structure actively supports those students who can evidence sufficient employment or voluntary experience to claim for Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL).

Optional expenses whilst on the course may include:

  • £13 for subscription to the DBS Update Service 
  • £180 – £250 National Governing Body Qualification
  • Any additional resources individual to your own projects
  • £100 Sports Kit Bundle

The professionally branded sport kit will include the main items that will set you up for practical sessions, gym workouts and work placements undertaken whilst you are on the programme. This will include:

  • Training T-Shirt
  • Training Pants
  • Hoodie
  • ¼ Zip Jumper

All items that are included in the kit will be branded with the University Centre/HE Sport logo and it is an anticipated that all students purchase the sports kit to facilitate practical lessons and maintain a professional image when on work placements in the UK or in the EU.

Students will need to undergo an enhanced DBS check due to the work placement element of this course, which will be funded by the department. However, you may wish to pay for a yearly subscription to the DBS Update Service which will allow you to keep your DBS certificate up to date and allow employers to check online that the document is still current or if any additional information has been added since its issue.

What's next

On successful completion of the Foundation degree, you can apply to progress onto the BSc (Hons) in Sports Performance Degree Course at Leeds City College, as well as other Colleges and Universities to do a top-up degree or progress onto a related career pathway.

It is expected that graduates will find employment in a range of sport performance roles including; sport performance nutrition, sport science support and strength and conditioning, sports analysis and teaching at various levels.

Additionally, graduates have the opportunity continue onto further study such as MSc and potentially PhD
