This course is validated by Pearson:

The purpose of the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Engineering (Manufacturing Engineering) is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals who are able to meet the demands of employers in the rapidly evolving engineering sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. This means that you will not only learn the necessary fundamental knowledge, but also more specialist skills such as advanced manufacturing technology or manufacturing systems engineering. You will also be exposed to very current subjects related to sustainability and Lean manufacturing.

In addition to academic knowledge this programme imparts practical skills in mechanical engineering (such as turning and milling) and electrical engineering (including measurement technology) and we will support you to gain work experience where you will develop your engineering skills further and also employability skills such as CV writing and interview preparation. These features have been added after consultation with employers.

The qualification has the dual aim of preparing the students for direct entry to a range of technical and management careers (such as engineering technician, control engineer, electronic design engineer or approvals/production engineer) and of offering the opportunity to enrol on top-up degrees.

Benefits / Skills you will develop

  • You will be equipped with the essential qualities of an engineer, including integrity and regard for cost and sustainability, as they apply to a range of roles and responsibilities within the sector, such as engineering technician, manufacturing engineer or production engineer.
  • This programme will enable progression to top-up degree (typically 1 year full time), by supporting the development of academic study skills and the selection of appropriate units for study during the second year.
  • What makes this full time HND special is the teaching of practical engineering skills in mechanical and electrical/electronic engineering.
  • A further strength of this programme is the work placement sandwiched between year one and two. This will develop job seeking skills such as locating vacancies, CV writing and interview techniques. In addition, it aims to enhance your employability skills.
  • Once you have achieved this qualification you meet the academic requirements for the Engineering Council’s Engineering Technician Standard (EngTech), however it does not afford you the accreditation.
  • Studying at Leeds City College will offer individual support due to small class sizes.
  • This programme offers the opportunity to explore the application of theoretical knowledge through project work and research.

How you will be assessed

The assessments are scheduled so that deadline clashes are minimised and the main assessment mechanisms are:

  • Assignments (tasks include maths problems, presentations, essays or reports)
  • Project work
  • A minimal quantity of exams

Where is the course delivered (facilities / classrooms)
