The Foundation Degree Leadership and Management is designed to ensure that you cover a broad range of modules, which will equip you for employment within leadership and management roles.

The programme offers modules which combine a range of theoretical and practical elements designed to provide you with the skills needed in the workplace, as well as the academic rigour appropriate to a Higher Education programme.

You will be introduced to a range of concepts that underpin leadership and management, which are essential to operating at a supervisory and/or management level.

You will be provided with the underpinning knowledge and expertise to progress either into the employment market or to continue your studies onto an appropriate final year top-up degree.

Part-time students will be expected to be in employment whilst on programme, and full-time students will be expected to complete vocational experience within the occupational sector throughout the programme.

This will provide valuable experience, networking opportunities and a chance to apply academic study in a working environment.

This is a course that encourages you to use your subject specialist skills and incorporate these skills and knowledge into your assessments. If you are a member of the Hospitality, Beauty, Hair, Sport or any other industry and you are interested in learning new skills and knowledge to allow you to progress within your industry in terms of leadership and management, then this course allows you to achieve that. You can use your relevant skills and knowledge to contextualise your assessments to your industry area.

You will develop a range of academic skills such as presenting, referencing, research and writing, as well as many skills required by employers such as communication, use of IT, teamwork, independent work and dealing with the general public.

Leadership and management skills will also be developed, appropriate to varying occupational sectors.

How you will be assessed

Continuous assessment ensures that your progress is monitored throughout the modules with personal tutor support.

A variety of assessment methods are used, including presentations, role-plays, professional discussions, portfolios and reports.

This course will be delivered at the University Centre where students will have access to a HE-specific study zone, including computer facilities, and social area.

Entry requirements

The minimum requirements are 1 x E in a relevant A level; or other Level 3 qualification; or Access to Higher Education certificate. A GCSE grade C in English, or equivalent, is also required. However, candidates receiving this offer will have experience in their chosen subject area.

A typical offer is 2 X D at A level or a merit/merit profile in a BTEC Level 3 Diploma (was a National Certificate) / BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma (was a National Diploma) qualification, alongside a number of GCSEs at C or above.

All successful candidates will have the required literacy skills to complete the course.

Students who do not have GCSE grade C in English, or Maths, may need these to progress to Top Up degree programmes, and will be given the opportunity to gain these whilst on programme.

We welcome applications from students who do not meet the standard entry requirements (for example mature candidates). We will consider each applicant on their own merit and suitability, based on individual qualities, experience and learning from within the chosen occupational sector. These applicants will be invited for interview, and asked to provide evidence of their experience.

The course structure actively supports claims for Accreditation of Prior Certified Learning (APCL) and Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).

Applicants for the part-time mode of study must be currently working in the occupational sector. International qualifications will be assessed against these criteria.

Speakers of other languages will need to possess an IELTS band score of 6.0 (with no-less than 5.5 in any one element) or a recognised English Level 2 qualification.
