The Foundation Degree in Computer Games (Concept Art) is designed to allow students to build knowledge and experience to find their place in the world of computer game design.

This is a specialist pathway for people wishing to learn skills in Concept Art for Computer Games. You will develop skills in developing digital concept art as well as more traditional art practises, such as, life drawing and observational drawing.

Working across a number of disciplines, students will experience the full range of job roles in the game industry and gain an understanding of how these roles work together to produce innovative, engaging games.

Students will have the opportunity to devise their own game mechanics and assets, developing skills in a number of creative and technical disciplines to create well realised, playable games. There will be a strong emphasis on professional development and employability, encouraging students to work to industry standards in real world contexts.

You will be given the opportunity to work across a wide range of computer games platforms, learning to create assets using industry standard software and implement those assets into the game engines used by professional designers.

You will also be developed as a creative individual, learning to appreciate and apply the artistic and narrative techniques that form the core of games as an aesthetic experience.

Finally, you will become well versed in the real world of computer games, learning how the past, present and future of computer games are vital to your career and personal development.

You will assessed in a variety of ways including:  practical tasks, portfolios, essays, case studies and presentations.

Where is the course delivered

The course will be delivered at the Quarry Hill Campus.

Entry requirements

A typical offer would normally be made up of appropriate level 3 qualifications, such as full A levels or BTEC L3 Diploma.

This could be translated as 2 x D at A level, or a Merit profile in a relevant creative or computer based BTEC National Diploma/Certificate, together with 5 of GCSE grades at C or above including English.

We welcome applications from mature candidates who may not have met the academic criteria, but can demonstrate experience in their chosen field of art practice.

The course structure actively supports claims for Accreditation of Prior Certified Learning (APCL) and Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).

International qualifications will be assessed against these criteria. Speakers of other languages will need to possess an IELTS band score of 6.0 (with no-less than 5.5 in any one element) or a recognised English Level 2 qualification.

All students are to present a portfolio and supporting academic text. This is undertaken during an interview or correspondence for distance applicants.

Following competition of your foundation degree you may wish to top-up to a full BA (Hons) Computer Games (Concept Art) here at Leeds City College* or another institution. The course will lead on to employment in the games industry in either a freelance or contracted position. There is also the potential to setup business as a small independent developer with a group of your peers.
