You will undertake the following three generic modules in the first semester:
- The Psychology of Teaching Learning and Assessment
- Personal Development Behaviour and Welfare in Education and Training
- Demonstrating Professional Knowledge and Competence
You will then undertake three specialist modules in the second semester, which may include:
- Teaching SEN in the Education and Training Sector: Curriculum and Cultural Context. In this module trainees will explore the factors that influence the curriculum for young people and adults with specific needs, including contextualisation and employability.
- Perspectives on SEN Teaching and Learning. In this module trainees will examine international differences in SEN provision, learners’ progression and societal attitudes towards SEN provision. Effective practices in SEN provision across the globe will be investigated and the outcomes of this research will be used to inform practice.
- The Pedagogy and Practice of SEN Teaching and Learning. This practice-based module aims to provide the content knowledge and professional practice skills relating to subject specific pedagogy in SEN practice across a range of contexts in the Education and Training sector.
You will develop the ability to:
- Critically appraise evidence from a range of appropriate sources on SEN provision to arrive at recommendations for practice.
- Apply current empirical research into best practice in SEN provision to own context.
- Interrogate a range of pedagogical issues relating to SEN provision, with the aim of improving educational opportunities for students with particular needs in own setting.
- Work with others to support the needs of SEN learners and develop best practice in SEN teaching, learning and assessment.
A range of assessment strategies will be used. These may include the following:
- Teaching Practitioner File
- Teaching observation
- Reflective writing
- Evaluative Report
- Academic poster
- Research study
This course will be delivered at the University Centre where students will have access to a HE-specific study zone, including computer facilities, and social area.
All potential applicants are required to attend and successfully pass an interview and will need to fulfil the following entry criteria to be offered a place on the programme:
- Five GCSE subjects, including three at GCSE level Grade C or above (which must include English and Mathematics) and a minimum of two A level (minimum grade D) or equivalent qualifications. These can be in any subject.
- An honours degree (min 2:2) or equivalent in any subject.
- All places are subject to a satisfactory enhanced check for regulated activity with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

The Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (Post-16 Education and Training) (Specific Educational Needs (SEN)) (Full Time) course provides routes to Qualified Teacher Learning & Skills (QTLS) status. Candidates who successfully complete the programme may wish to progress onto Masters level study.
It is anticipated that trainees will have the opportunity to be employed by the institution offering the placement after their traineeship has been completed.
In 2017/18 82%, and in 2016/17 62%, of trainees secured employment in education by the end of their course.
