What you learn

The course covers the Level 3 LLUK entry requirements for the Level 5 subject specific numeracy teacher education programmes.

You will study two from the following three units:

  • Using mathematics – academic subjects
  • Using mathematics – professional and vocational contexts
  • Using mathematics – public and personal life

The 12-credit Award includes 45 contact hours, when a variety of strategies will be used including whole-class, pair and individual work, presentations and workshop activities. Non-contact hours include reading and practice to develop mathematical skills. Assessment includes controlled assessments in class.

Entry requirements

GCSE Mathematics A-C, or equivalent.

There is no requirement to undertake practical teaching.

Achievement of this Award will fulfil the LLUK entry assessment requirements for entry to the Level 5 Subject Specialist Diploma in Numeracy.

If you are not yet teaching numeracy, it could lead on to the Level 3 Certificate for Essential Skills Practitioners (C&G 8375).

It could also complement generic teacher training courses.

It is also appropriate for teachers/tutors/trainers of other subjects to improve their knowledge and skills in mathematics.
