The Certificate in Education (Post-16 Education and Training) is a part-time, in-service course for teachers who are currently teaching in the Education and Training (Post-16) sector who do not hold a degree level qualification.

The course has been developed to reflect the diversity of practice across the Education and Training (Post-16) sector and its increasingly complex nature. It provides training for those with an extensive range of teaching or training responsibilities in the sector and have been designed to reflect the professional communities in which teachers work and the factors that shape the contexts and nature of their professional practice.

The course is relevant to applicants from a diverse range of occupational and academic contexts. In-service applicants may hold teaching or training roles in a very broad range of organisations and sites for learning including Training Providers, local Skills Centres, hospital or prison education, charities or Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).

The Certificate in Education (Post-16 Education and Training) will help you to achieve a sound conceptual and practical understanding of how to influence the quality of teaching, learning and assessment in the post-16 sector. Through innovative teaching and learning strategies, such as collaborative teaching and in-the-moment coaching, the course aims to model practices that trainees can enact in classrooms across different curricula and changing contexts in the Education and Training (Post-16) sector.

A pre-service route is also available. Applicants to the pre-service route may include current and aspiring teachers or occupational experts from industry who want to become teachers in the Education and Training Sector.

How you will be assessed

The assessment tasks are designed to stimulate authentic, meaningful and engaging practice in the workplace and relate, as far as possible, to authentic tasks and realistic contexts. The following summative assessment formats and methods will be used throughout the programme:

  • Investigative research within the workplace
  • Individual presentations using Web 2.0 technologies
  • Academic Poster
  • E-portfolio
  • Classroom observation

Opportunities for learners to participate in peer assessment and self-assessment will be given throughout the programme. Other methods of assessing learners formatively include:

  • peer observation
  • joint observation with subject-specialist mentors
  • debate
  • class questioning
  • case study analysis
  • concept maps

Where is the course delivered (facilities / classrooms)

This course will be delivered at the University Centre where students will have access to a HE-specific study zone, including computer facilities, and social area.

Entry requirements

All potential applicants are required to attend and successfully pass an interview and will need to fulfil the follow entry criteria to be offered a place on the programme:

  • Five GCSE subjects, including three at GCSE level Grade C or above (which must include English and Mathematics) and a  minimum of two A level (minimum grade D) or equivalent qualifications. These can be in any subject.
  • At least a minimum of NVQ (NQF) level 3 in your vocational area.
  • A minimum of 50 hours of teaching per year throughout the duration of the course.

All places are subject to a satisfactory enhanced check for regulated activity with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), formerly known as a Criminal Records Bureau check.
