Through our learner-centred approach, you will study the principles and practice of assessment as it applies in the work environment (assessing vocational qualifications in the workplace, ie NVQs). By the end of the qualification you will have developed the skills required to be able to competently assess a range of learners both in and outside of the workplace using a variety of methods.
Unit 1: Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment

The aim of this unit is to assess a learning and development practitioner’s knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices of assessment.
Unit 2: Assess Occupational Competence in the Work Environment
Unit Reference No: H/601/5314
Credit Value: 6
The aim of this unit is to assess a learning and development practitioner’s performance in carrying out assessments of occupational competence in a work environment.
This is a valuable unit for all trainers and teachers of vocational subjects that involve assessment of occupational competence in a work environment.
Unit 3: Assess Vocational Skills, Knowledge and Understanding

Credit Value: 6
The aim of this unit is to assess a learning and development practitioner’s performance in carrying out the assessment of vocational skills, knowledge and understanding outside of the work environment.
Assessment will be through a number of different methods, including:
- Written questions
- Oral questions
- Observation (at least once by your Assessor in your workplace)
- Witness Testimony
- Work Product
- Professional Discussion
You must be working in a role where you will have access to at least two learners (on NVQ/apprenticeship programmes) that you can assess with support from a qualified mentor (assessor or IQA).
When assessing learners in the work environment, you must be able to evidence that you are using the following assessment methods (Awarding Body requirement):

Qualified assessors may choose to progress to doing the L4 IQA Award, although they must have IQA responsibilities in order to be able to achieve this. Another qualification that might be of interest is the L3 Award in Education and Training.
