Are you wanting to work towards becoming a qualified teaching assistant, working with children or young people in primary, secondary or further education colleges? This course will equip you with the knowledge and skills. You will learn about children and young people’s development, safeguarding their welfare, supporting literacy and numeracy and schools as organisations. A work placement in a relevant setting is built into this course.

Our teaching assistant courses have been designed to provide learners with an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people in school or college environments. 

At interview or enrolment, a decision will be made as to whether you are following the level 2 teaching assistant route or the level 3 teaching assistant route.

Support the health and safety of children and young people

Maintain relationships with children and young people

Support positive behaviour in a learning environment for children and young people

Contribute to teamwork in a learning environment

Understand children and young people’s play and leisure

Promote an effective learning environment

Provide displays in a learning environment

You will also attend a placement ​every week to practice your skills in the classroom. 

Benefits / Skills you will develop

You will learn all about working in a school and how to support children in their learning. You will develop the skills needed to be in a school as a professional person and will gain practical knowledge of the school curriculum and education. This will enable you to support a teacher as a teaching assistant at level 2.

How you will be assessed

You will be assessed through a mixture of written assignments and observations by an assessor while you are in work placement.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs at grade 3 and above, including English language and preferably maths.

What's Next

Upon achieving the level 2 qualification, you will be equipped and ready to move on to the level 3 supporting teaching and learning course. Level 3 learners will be able to apply for the level 3 diploma in supporting teaching and learning or on to employment if over 18 years.
