What you learn

Through a variety of different types of classes, you will study the following units:

  • Roles and responsibilities of the early years practitioner
  • Health and safety of babies and young children in the early years
  • Equality, diversity and inclusive practice in early years settings
  • Safeguarding, protection and welfare of babies and young children in early years settings
  • Understand how to support children’s development
  • Support care routines for babies and young children
  • Support the planning and delivery of activities, purposeful play opportunities and educational programmes
  • Promote play in an early years setting
  • Support wellbeing of babies and young children for healthy lifestyles
  • Support babies and young children to be physically active
  • Support the needs of babies and young children with special educational needs and disability (SEND)

Benefits / Skills you will develop

You will develop your knowledge and skills in working with children under 5 years of age. This will involve a range of practical and knowledge-based classes, enabling you to provide education and care for young children.

How you will be assessed

You will be assessed through a mixture of written assignments and observations by an assessor while you are in the work placement.

This course is delivered at Quarry Hill Campus.

Entry requirements

16-18 years old

4 GCSEs at grade 3 and above, including English language and preferably maths.


This will be discussed on an individual basis at your interview.

What's next

Employment: Upon successful completion of this qualification, learners can enter the workforce as a qualified level 2 early years practitioner and be counted towards the level 2 ratios. 

Further studying: the learner will be equipped and may be ready to apply for our Technical Level 3 Certificate in Childcare and Education course. Some learners may wish to undertake our Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning qualification, and qualify to work with children aged 5 years+ as a teaching assistant.

Progression opportunities

This qualification allows a learner to count towards the level 2 ratio as a qualified level 2 early years practitioner across the early years workforce.
Learners may work under supervision in a variety of roles such as:

  • Nursery practitioner 
  • Classroom assistant
  • Pre-school practitioner
