The Certificate in Human Resource Practice (CHRP) is the first step to a professional career in human resources. Along with Associate Membership of the CIPD, the CHRP qualification demonstrates to employers, clients and peers that you’ve attained a recognised level of professional competence as an HR practitioner. It shows you’re committed to developing your expertise and you have the knowledge and skills to add real value to their business.

The CIPD is the professional body for HR and people development. It has over 135,000 members internationally who work in HR and learning and development. As a member of the CIPD, you can keep you up to date on the latest developments in people management and development. As a professional body the CIPD supports their members, set the standards for professional qualifications and advise individuals and businesses on how to manage their people effectively and fairly.

The learning is delivered through weekly group classes with experienced CIPD qualified tutors and guest speakers. Some guided learning and independent study is expected in addition to the taught hours and there is also an element of group project work.

This course is for you if:

  • want to gain the essential knowledge and skills required to move into HR
  • are working in HR at a support level, but do not hold a formal HR qualification
  • aspire to become a professional member of the CIPD
  • are a line manager, with responsibility for people management and development.

What you learn

The course contains 6 modules, each focusing on a different element of HR operations. The course has a focus on practical application, along with the exploration of underpinning models and theories that inform best practice.

How you will be assessed

There are no “exams” as such. Assessment is through submission of reports (1,200 – 1,500 words), presentations and observation of students carrying out practical activities, throughout the course. You will also need to demonstrate your ongoing commitment to professional development by keeping up to date plans and records.

It helps if you are working in a HR environment and have access to organisational policies and practices, but it is not essential. If you’re not working in a HR environment, you may need to spend additional time researching.

Guidance will be given on how to prepare and deliver suitable reports and presentations. 

Feedback will be given on all assessed work and students are expected to use the feedback to develop their written and presentation skills further as part of their continuous development as professionals.



Where is the course delivered (facilities / classrooms)

CIPD courses are delivered at Leeds City College’s new Printworks Campus on the site of the former Alf Cooke Printworks, one of the most recognisable industrial landmarks in Leeds. The state-of-the-art facilities are uniquely set within the restored buildings alongside 21st century architecture. With modern teaching, learning and recreation space. The three storey building houses leading edge IT and library facilities, workspaces and flexible learning zones.

Entry requirements

Ideally you will be working in a human resources environment, or have people management responsibilities.

Applications are welcome from people who can demonstrate relevant previous work experience.

3 GCSEs or equivalent (Achievement of prior experience and learning will be taken into account)
