This course enables you to experience a wide range of backstage roles in the theatre and is designed for students wishing to make their career in the theatre or related industries. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills with real production experience of the backstage roles that are essential for the staging of a successful performance. You will gain insight into the different career paths available in this busy and exciting industry and will build a portfolio of work to showcase your talents for future educational or employment opportunities.
At the end of your second year you will lead a team of technicians or production artists in your preferred specialist area on a large scale production. You will be responsible for creating a design that meets the directors intentions. Your team will realise your ideas transform your given performance space that also meets the needs of the performers and audience.
To achieve your level 3 qualification (equivalent to 3 A-Levels) you will need to complete a minimum of 18 units during your full-time 2 year programme of study. The course is accredited by BTEC and you will be assessed through a variety of different methods.
This course will be delivered at our brand new Quarry Hill Campus alongside Leeds Playhouse and situated amongst Leeds' creative quarter.
Sessions will be held in state of the art facilities including: Theatre, Technical Workshop, Hair and Make-up workshop, Costume Workshop and Production Meeting Room.
If you are part of the new grading system for GCSE we would see a Grade 4 or above as the equivalent of a Grade C in this offer.
5 A*-C GCSEs including English or equivalent and a successful interview. Portfolio of creative work (if applicable).
Most of our students tend to go onto Higher Education to study degrees in various backstage areas including: Technical Theatre, Stage Management, Events Management, Set and Props Making, Make-up Special Effects and Costume Design. Some will go directly into employment or apprenticeships within the performing arts industry.
