The computer game industry is growing fast and always changing. Programmers, artists, writers and animators all come together to produce some of the most innovative and exciting work in the world today.

You will be introduced to the practical skills and understanding that you would need to work in the computer games industry. Produce your own games and gain a deep understanding of why existing games work.

Write game stories, create concept art, plan and design computer games and get to know the games industry.

Discover what it is that attracts players to games and harness this knowledge to develop your own. Appreciate the effort that goes into making games that are fun, educational and inspiring.

Develop programming skills in C++ and C# to produce 2D and 3D games using industry standard software such as Unreal Engine and Unity.

Design and animate computer game graphics, environments and game assets (levels, characters and props) with software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Maya and 3DS Max.

This course will allow you to develop necessary skills and gain knowledge required to be a part of the multi-billion pound industry, where you will be transforming your game ideas into reality for the players of the future.

How you will be assessed


You will be provided with multiple projects and assignments addressing a number of skills and disciplines. Assignments are all assessed by the tutors. You will then work on a final project, the grade for which could be a Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Where is the course delivered (facilities / classrooms)

From September 2019 Creative Arts courses will be delivered at our new campus at Quarry Hill.

4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above (including English Language or Maths).


What's next

Successful completion of the Computer Games course will lead to the award of an Diploma/Extended Diploma in Digital Creative Media Production (Digital Games), which is the equivalent of two/three A-levels. Most learners progress onto a degree course in areas such as Games Development, Games Design, Interactive Media, Art & Design, Computer Science or Computer Games Programming. The qualification is also excellent preparation for a career in many branches of computing including the multimedia and computer games industries.

Completing the Computer Games course, you will emerge from the study programme with well rounded set of creative skills and an underpinning knowledge of the games industries. This course is for you if you want to explore a future in the visual, creative, computing side of games creation.

Leeds City College offers progression to its own degree in Computer Games, which builds on the skills developed in this course.
