This course will prepare you for a career in the industry. You can expect to receive expert knowledge from tutors on specialist makeup techniques including airbrushing, special effects, basic prosthetics, hair and wigs. You will also gain experience working alongside a professional photographer to build up an industry-ready portfolio. This portfolio will be an invaluable tool to showcase your work at interviews for higher education, employment, or social media promotion for freelance opportunities. 

During your time at Leeds City College, you will have the opportunity to utilise your skills outside the classroom. Due to our extensive links in the industry, you can expect to be involved in theatre productions, fashion shoots, and many more invaluable work experience opportunities. 

Please note: you will be required to wear a compulsory industry uniform at college. Photography costs for your professional portfolio may also be involved.

How you will be assessed

Practical application

Projects will be set to improve your practical skills, knowledge and understanding. For practical assessments, you will be observed and assessed by an experienced tutor.

Theoretical examinations

External examination papers will assess your knowledge and understanding. This applies to the following units:

  • Camouflage
  • Airbrush
  • Fashion and photographic


As part of this qualification, you are required to produce a portfolio of evidence. A portfolio will confirm the knowledge, understanding and skills that you have learnt throughout the course.

The course is delivered at our Printworks Campus.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements are a minimum of four GCSE grades 9-4 (A – C) including maths and English.

Be prepared to attend an interview to determine your skillset and review your portfolio of creative evidence.


What's next?

On completion of this exciting level 3 course, you will have the necessary skills and experience to progress on to degree level study such as the Fashion, Theatrical and Media Hair and Makeup Foundation Degree.

Alternatively, you may decide to undertake other vocational related pathways or work within the creative makeup industry and expand your skills and knowledge in fashion, theatre and photography studios.
