This course equips you with knowledge, understanding and practical skills relating to computer science. This will enable you to apply for and progress on to our Foundation Degrees in either Applied Computing or Cyber Security and Networking or a suitable course at an alternative university.

The course develops crucial academic skills, as well as preparing you for university or employment, with essential skills such as academic writing, time management, research and referencing

What You Learn

To achieve the Diploma in Computer Science you will study a total of 60 credits over a single academic year. All students must study academic skills (the toolkit needed for success at university) as well as choosing between the following modules, depending on your pathway:

  • Research skills
  • Computer architecture
  • Systems analysis
  • Computing project development
  • Components of a computer system
  • Website design and production
  • Networking
  • Emerging technologies
  • Software development
  • Presentation skills
  • Further maths and calculus

These broad skills will prepare you for entry into any Computer Science/Computing/Networking degree course.

This access course offers a Cyber Security pathway. This pathway includes:

  • Encryption and Security Concepts
  • Introduction to Cyber Security and Cyber Defence

The course develop a sound base knowledge and skillset that are appropriate for progression to either university or employment. This will enable you to progress onto our Foundation Degrees in either Applied Computing or Cyber Security and Networking or a suitable course at an alternative university.

How you will be assessed

A range of assessment methods are used, these include written evidence, practical demonstrations, essays and reports. We also gather evidence via tutor and peer observations. All work is internally moderated and externally moderated by assessors from the awarding body CERTA.

Where is the course delivered (facilities / classrooms)

At the moment it is intended that the course will be delivered at our Printworks Campus utilising computer suites and classrooms.

Entry requirements

You must be 19 years of age by 1st September in the year the course starts and have achieved four GCSEs at grade C or above including maths and English.

Be aware that it is essential that you will have attained GCSE grade C or above in English, maths (if specifically required for your choice of course and University) prior to entry on the Access Diploma as these subjects are often required for degree level courses. If necessary, you may be able to study one GCSE or a Level 2 qualification alongside your diploma.

Some universities will accept alternatives to GCSEs (you must check this with your preferred university). Professional qualifications will be also considered.

What's Next?

After successful completion of our course you will be able to progress onto our Foundation Degrees in either Applied Computing or Cyber Security and Networking or a suitable course at an alternative university.

The foundation degree is the first two years of an Honours degree. You can then complete your Honours degree studying with ourselves by completing one further year. These degree courses are designed so that you can study and work at the same time – typically two days per week or part time – one day per week.
