Combined Science: Synergy GCSE

This new course is a double GCSE award combining Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The course will involve up to 3 hours of classroom time in college, but you will need to do a substantial amount of study in your own time. Practical activities are offered during the Christmas and Easter holidays.

You will need a minimum of a Grade 4 (C) in GCSE Maths and a Grade 3/4 (D/C) in English already achieved. This course replaces the GCSEs in core and Additional Science which have previously been offered.

What You Will Learn

The course consists of two main components: 1. Life and Environmental Sciences (Units 1-4) and 2. Physical Sciences (Units 5-8). You will be tested externally with 4 exams of 1 hour 45 minutes each.

The course includes the traditional GCSE elements of Chemistry, Physics and Biology.

Students will develop the skills they need to progress including teamwork, time-keeping, confidence and positive decision making. There is a substantial practical element to the course.

How You Will Be Assessed

You will be assessed by four exams in June which are 1 hour and 45 minutes each. Practical knowledge will be tested by questions in the exams as well.

Where Is The Course Delivered ( Facilities / Classrooms)

Classes are taught in modern well equipped laboratories at Park Lane Campus.

Entry Requirements

You will need to have a Grade 4 (C) in GCSE Maths and a Grade 3 or 4 (D or C) in English although other equivalent qualifications or experience may be accepted.

The grades available on the course are 1-1 to 9-9 (as it is a double award).

What's Next

The qualification will enable you to study science at level 3 and help you get onto teaching and nursing courses.
