This course is for those with a desire to work within the makeup industry in fashion and photography, or as a self-employed makeup artist.

During this programme, you will develop and enhance both fashion and photographic makeup techniques as well as creative hair styling. You will gain experience working alongside a professional photographer to build up an industry ready portfolio. Alongside this, you will have the opportunity to gain external work experience in theatres, fashion shows and much more.

You will be an enthusiastic, dedicated, and proactive student who wishes to become a successful creative makeup artist in various industries within a demanding and competitive worldwide market.

How you will it be assessed

Practical application

Projects will be set to improve your practical skills, knowledge and understanding. For practical assessments, you will be observed and assessed by an experienced tutor.

Theoretical examinations

External examination papers will assess your knowledge and understanding. This applies to the following units:

  • Health and safety
  • Applying makeup
  • The art of dressing hair
  • Providing eyelash and eyebrow treatment
  • Client consultation for hair services
  • Shampooing and conditioning the hair and scalp
  • Colouring hair using temporary colour


As part of this qualification, you will be required to produce a portfolio of evidence. This will confirm the knowledge, understanding and skills that you have learnt throughout the course.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements are a minimum of four GCSE grades 9-4 (A–C) including maths or English. 

We welcome applications from mature candidates who may not meet the academic criteria. Candidates in this category will be interviewed to assess their suitability for the course and will be asked to provide a portfolio of evidence to support their application.
