We are offering an exciting online course designed for those with busy lives who may find it difficult to attend a class every week. The start dates are flexible throughout the year and you can work at your own pace. This online course is suitable for those who are ready to gain Level 2 Functional Skills in English.

What should you consider before enrolling onto an online course with Leeds City College?

The list below details some expectations, you will need to:

  • Be an independent worker
  • Have good organisational skills
  • Be self-disciplined
  • Have good time management skills
  • Understand that online courses require as much - or more - time to complete as traditional classes
  • Understand that online courses often require you to use several different technologies
  • Expect collaboration with the teacher through various online communication methods
  • Expect to see your teacher for a minimum of six progress reviews and tutorials
  • Have access to the internet and a computer


Be prepared for an initial assessment to find the level at which you are currently working at, alongside a diagnostic assessment which looks at different elements of the course and identifies which areas you are competent in and which areas require more work.

Although this is an online study course, help and support is provided so you achieve your chosen qualification and a teacher will be assigned to you.

Expect to see your teacher for a minimum of three progress reviews and tutorials, and to complete the Speaking, Listening and Communication unit.

What You Learn / Units

English Functional Skills Online

The course content includes three distinct modules, each of which are assessed separately. All of the tasks and assessments are based on practical real-life situations which you may encounter in your work or home life. They also include the use of presentation skills as well as using grammar, spelling and punctuation correctly.

Modules include

  • Speaking and listening - taking part in a discussion, listening and responding to other people’s point of view, being able to present your ideas to a small group.
  • Reading - reading a variety of different texts and interpreting and responding to the information.
  • Writing - presenting information and ideas in your own words.


How you will be assessed

English Functional Skills Online

By undertaking an online test or paper test at the college.



Where is the course delivered (facilities / classrooms)

Both courses are delivered online, examinations at Enfield Centre, Leeds. 

Entry Requirements

English Functional Skills Online

You do not need any formal qualifications to join this course. You will be invited to attend an informal interview after you have completed an assessment to find out the skills you need to work on.

You will need to:

  • Be aged 19+
  • Have access to the internet and a computer
  • Use an internet browser such as Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox,etc.
  • Navigate a website
  • Download and install browser plug-ins
  • Create, modify and save electronic documents
  • Manage electronic files
  • Upload and/or download an electronic file
  • Utilise emails
