Functional Skills English for Adults

Functional Skills English can be studied part-time over 1 year. Classes take place at various sites with different start dates through the year. Classes are available during the day and in the evening, and are 2.5 hours long, based in a friendly and welcoming environment. Functional Skills is the right course for you if you want to improve your speaking and listening, reading and writing. When you complete Functional Skills at level 1, you should be ready for GCSE English.

When you apply for an English course at the college, you will be invited to one of our centres for assessment and interview to see which course best suits your needs and abilities. The centre where this takes place is not necessarily where you will study and we will ask you about your preferred campus during the interview. You will also need to do a skills assessment, which is nothing to worry about, we just need to make sure you are enrolling onto the correct course. Please note, the skills assessment and interview can take up to 2 hours so please allow plenty of time.

Your strengths and weaknesses will be assessed at the beginning of your course and you will agree an Individual Learning Plan with your teacher who will give you feedback on your progress throughout the course. You can work on topics to meet your individual needs at a pace that suits you. You will be expected to complete study outside the classroom and access to online resources to support your studies will be made available.

At the beginning of the course we will check you have the IT skills you will need to support you in your learning and you will complete an IT qualification.

For GCSE English and Functional skills, you will follow the nationally recognised syllabus.

You will develop your English language and literature skills and communication skills necessary for employment and everyday life.

How you will be assessed

Dependent on qualification and level, assessment methods vary. Each course will require you to either undertake an internal assessment or examination.

Where is the course delivered (facilities / classrooms)

The course is offered at the following Leeds City College sites:

  • Joseph Priestley Centre (Beeston)
  • Deacon House
  • Enfield Centre
  • Park Lane Campus
  • Rothwell Centre

Day and evening options are available at some of these.

Entry requirements

You do not need any formal qualifications to join the Adult English classes. You will be invited to attend an informal interview and complete some assessments to find out the skills you need to work on. We will discuss your best options and help you to decide which course is the best for you.

To begin the GCSE English course you should already be fluent in reading, be able to understand accurately a variety of extended texts and be able to write down your ideas clearly. You will also be invited into college to complete some assessments and have an interview.

A strong desire to learn and progress is also advantageous.

What's next

Following completion of the Adult English course, there are opportunities to join other short courses, move onto the next level qualification or apply for GCSE English or vocational courses.

The GCSE English qualification is a vital literacy qualification which can lead to better employment prospects and access to further study.

Our students progress to a wide variety of courses at higher levels and improve their employability potential as a result of studying both of these courses.

Some students, for example, have progressed from Level 1 or Level 2 Functional Skills to GCSE English at Leeds City College. Others have gained confidence doing presentations which in turn have helped at job interviews and employment.
