Watercolour Painting

During this course you will be encouraged to develop your watercolour painting skills. It is suitable for beginners and those who have already attended a Watercolour course and would like to move on to the next step. You will work from observation as well as from your own research.

Basic materials are included in the course fee. Use of paper, brushes, pallets and basic quality watercolour paints.

You will need to bring good quality watercolour blocks or tubes, such as Windsor and Newton or St.Petesburg White Nights, everything will be explained during the first session. You may also wish to bring along your own watercolour brushes of various sizes and watercolour paper.

Your tutor is Julia Borodina. Julia is a Russian-born Fine Artist, who has a passion for colour, loose painting technique and enjoys using impressionistic approaches within her work. Julia holds a BA in Fine Art from Omsk University, Russia and an MA in Painting from University of Wolverhampton. She has an extended experience of designing and leading creative workshops specialising in painting and drawing. Julia’s work has been exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours annual exhibition and at the Royal Society of Birmingham Artists. www.juliaborodina.co.uk

What will I learn on the course?

You will have group as well as individual guidance and instructions appropriate to a focus on each session.

During the 10 weeks you will:

  • Gain an experience in mixing colours and use brushes to your advantages;
  • Explore tonal and colour values;
  • Practice in applying compositional rules;
  • You will be given an opportunity to create personal work within the direction of a theme set, developing a personal approach to watercolour painting.


Teaching is informal and encouraging.

How you will it be assessed?

Informal one to one assessment will be given during each session, helping you to develop your work.

What's Next

You can continue making progress by joining the next term’s Watercolour evening course as the themes and tasks will vary in different semesters. Alternatively, you may wish to try our Acrylic and Oil painting classes, or even join our 5 Day Intensive courses over Easter and summer periods in order to practice your painting techniques.
