You can become qualified to work with children or young people in primary, secondary or schools for specialist support.

You will learn about children and young people’s development, safeguarding their welfare, supporting literacy and numeracy and schools as organisations.

Work placement in a relevant setting is built into this course.

Benefits / Skills you will develop

This course will develop your skills as a teaching assistant within the school to support children to learn and develop effectively. You will learn how to keep children safe and protected, and how to support positive behaviour. You will learn how to develop professional relationships with the workforce within schools, and how to work with parents and children in partnership. You will be assisting the teacher in preparing and delivering learning activities for children in primary or secondary education.

How you will be assessed

They will be assessed by your tutor or assessor using a range of methods. This will include direct observation in the workplace, a portfolio of evidence, written assignments and completing set tasks.

You will also study in English and maths alongside this course, as they are key requirements for working in education and supporting children to develop literacy and numeracy skills.

Entry requirements

You will need to have a passion for working with children and the energy and enthusiasm to engage with them in a work placement. You will need to do 2 days per week in a school placement.

4 GCSEs at grade 3 or 4 or a full Level 2 Childcare qualification.

To apply for this course you will need either English or Maths GCSE at grade 4 (C) or you may have achieved functional skills Level 2.

What's next

You can progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools, or the Foundation Degree in Learning Support.

You could become a Teaching Assistant, a Senior Learning Support Assistant , Senior Special Educational Needs Assistant, or a Learning Mentor
