The ESOL team and Sport Lecturer, Raza Siddique at Leeds City College have been selected respectively from thousands of nominations nationwide to receive a prestigious Silver Pearson Teaching Award on Thank a Teacher Day, 16 June.

The awards are an annual celebration of exceptional teachers, created to recognize the life-changing impact they can have on the lives of the young people they teach.

The ESOL team and Raza Siddique will now join fellow Silver Award winners at the UK final of the Pearson Teaching Awards, where they will find out if they have won a Gold Plato Award, the UK’s ‘Oscar for Teachers’.

Held at a glittering ceremony in London on 22 October, ‘Britain’s Classroom Heroes’ will be filmed and broadcast by the BBC as a showcase of excellence in education. Bill Jones, Deputy CEO Curriculum and Quality at Leeds City College, said: “This is a remarkable achievement which is testament to the exceptional teaching at the college.

“We pride ourselves on offering innovative teaching and learning and we’re extremely proud of the ESOL team and Raza Siddique for being recognised as outstanding local heroes of education.”

Rod Bristow, President of Pearson UK, added: “Great teaching can have a huge impact on a child’s education so it’s vital for us to celebrate inspirational teachers, for their commitment to teaching and learning and for improving the life chances of the next generation.”

Other teachers who were nominated for an award include Programme Manager, Kaye Rogers, Sport Lecturer, Ryan Grant, and Curriculum Leader, Adam Ryding, who all received a certificate of excellence.
