During National Carers Week 2017, students on the Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care course volunteered at the Hamara Centre to promote healthy activities for the mind.
Yalda Soltani and Sahar Sordat collaborated with Carers Leeds to create posters and run a Q&A session with service users to raise awareness of activities that can reduce stress, improve concentration and reduce the risk of strokes and heart disease.
As part of the session, the students taught service users to knit and use twiddlemuffs whilst explaining their benefits for people with dementia. The Hamara Centre was so impressed with Yalda and Sahar, that they have been offered further volunteering opportunities.
Jo Bradley, Programme Manager and Lecturer at Leeds City College, said: “Yalda and Sahar did a fantastic job at the local community centre and were beaming with pride at what they had achieved.
“I’m looking forward to seeing their relationship with the centre flourish as they continue to work with them in the future.”
