UK Qualifications Explained
In the UK, school is compulsory until the age of 16. Students take national exams (GCSE) in a wide variety of subjects before leaving school.
Further Education continues after school. Leeds City College is a Further Education College.
A-Levels, Diploma and Access courses prepare students for Higher Education.
Leeds City College also offers Higher Education courses. From 2013, our degree courses will be validated by Teesside University.

All UK courses are entered into a National Qualifications Framework. To show how courses increase in difficulty and knowledge, the framework has different ‘levels’. Qualifications can be different lengths and be in different subjects, but still be at the same level in the framework.
Level 2 is GCSE
Level 3 is Further Education
Level 4-6 is Higher Education
The framework ensures that all students progress onto new courses that are right for them – not too easy, or too difficult. Students move up through each level of study in turn. This prevents someone from finding a course too difficult because of gaps in their prior knowledge.
Leeds City College uses UKNARIC to determine entry requirements for international students. This National Agency has a database which helps UK institutions to match qualifications from abroad into the UK education system.
Meeting minimum academic entry requirements does not guarantee anyone a place on our courses (UK or other nationals). In addition to academic qualifications, we also consider applicants’ Personal Statements, English skills and work experience, where relevant. All applicants to Leeds City College are interviewed before being made an offer. We usually offer SKYPE interviews to international applicants, but if you are already in the UK we will invite you to College to be interviewed in person.
Below are some examples of qualifications from abroad that we can accept for entry to Further and Higher Education. This information may help you to apply for a UK course at the right level.
