What is Leeds City College?

Leeds City College is a new organisation created out of the merger between Leeds Thomas Danby, Leeds College of Technology, and Park Lane College Leeds & Keighley.

Where is it?

The College has facilities across Leeds and Keighley. All of the sites which were owned or operated by Leeds Thomas Danby, Leeds College of Technology, and Park Lane College Leeds & Keighley are still in use (as normal) but under the new identity of Leeds City College.

What’s Leeds City College like?

The College is a friendly and pleasant place. If you come to Leeds City College, you will learn in a well-resourced environment alongside people of a variety of ages and backgrounds.

What courses are on offer?

Click course search for the full range of programmes on offer at Leeds City College. Our new course search shows all the courses running at the College.

What if my son or daughter is unsure about which course to choose?

Contact the Student Services centre at the location your child wishes to study at for an informal discussion about courses with one of our careers advisers. The College’s Careers Service is completely impartial and is staffed entirely by qualified careers advisers. We can pre-arrange an appointment time to suit you.

I left school years ago … I’m not sure about returning to college and study?

It is often a major decision to return to study. Leeds City College welcomes applications from mature students and there are plenty of courses to choose from. For friendly advice and guidance please contact us directly. If you think it would be useful, we can arrange an informal guidance interview for you, where you can find out more about College programmes available.

When should students apply?

Many of our courses fill up quickly. Students should therefore apply early in the academic year. They do not have to wait for their exam results.

How can I apply to Leeds City College?

Find the course you wish to apply for in any of the three existing college prospectuses (for Leeds Thomas Danby, Leeds College of Technology, and Park Lane College Leeds & Keighley) and use any of the existing individual college application forms as normal.

Alternatively use the new Leeds City College online search which lists all of the courses at all sites, find the course you wish to study, and click on the apply button at the bottom of that course information page.

If you’re still uncertain, please get in touch for help.

Remember your application form is often our first impression of you. Please fill it in with care. References can be very important too. Applications for some programmes will be delayed if we do not receive a reference.

Once I’ve applied, what happens next?

When we receive your application we will acknowledge it promptly. If you have not heard from us two weeks after sending your form, please call us to check that we have received it.

At a later stage we may invite suitable candidates to visit the college, either for a meeting of applicants or for a personal interview. If we feel that you would benefit from additional guidance advice before a selection interview, we will arrange this for you.

We will let you know the result of your application as soon as possible. Our letter will contain one of the following:
> An unconditional offer of a place. This is a firm offer.
> A conditional offer of a place. This usually means you have to get satisfactory exam results before you can be offered a firm place. The letter will explain the conditions in detail.
> Recommendation to apply for an alternative course.
> Refusal with advice and guidance.

Whatever the offer we make to you, you should let us know as soon as possible whether you wish to accept your place.

Is there extra support if my son or daughter needs it?

In addition to personal tutors, the College has Learning Resources Centres (LRCs) and Libraries which are open every weekday, so that students can pop in when it is convenient, to do some extra study. If a bit of extra help is needed, just ask.

Students can also use computers to help them in their studies. We have experts on dyslexia if students need assessment or extra help and have a team of tutors and learning support assistants to aid students with disabilities.

Will anyone tell me if things go wrong?

You will receive progress reports and invitations to parents’ evenings. Tutors will contact you with any queries that arise to do with progress, or any unauthorised absences.

What level is the course my son or daughter is studying?

Post 16 qualifications can be bewildering. Some routes are academic and theoretical. Others are more practical and work orientated. You need to look at the way students learn on each course and remember that students can progress on to university courses via the academic route, or the vocational route.

What qualifications and experience do Leeds City College tutors have?

Our staff are professionals with degrees and industry experience. Many are specialists in their subject areas. Tutors regularly update their industrial experience to ensure that they understand new developments in their fields.

Does my son or daughter need to be at College when they do not have lessons?

A full-time course involves a set number of hours per week in classes, but students are expected to supplement this with individual study or group work. Most students use this time to use resources in the libraries. Many of our students have part-time jobs and we encourage this provided that they do not take on so much that it interferes with their studies.

Does the College accept students under 16 years old?

Leeds City College accepts applications from some students under 16 years old. Please call for details on bespoke programmes specifically designed for our younger students.
