The department of Landbased Studies in Horsforth covers Conservation, Horticulture, Floristry, and Animal Care. Each area works closely with the other subject areas, from Horticulture providing flowers for Floristry to work with, to donating plants and vegetables to the hungry Animal Centre inhabitants!
Horticulture & Conservation courses are based at the Horsforth Campus. The site occupies 14 acres of green belt land on the edge of Leeds, and is unique as a horticultural education centre set in an urban environment.
Our facilities include well equipped classrooms, a wind turbine, solar panels, a weather station, plus comprehensive wildlife and environment monitoring equipment. The site also includes an 8 acre wildflower meadow, ponds and a wide range of other habitats.
Current projects include pond and hedgerow regeneration, woodland planting, reed bed construction, a large composting system, organic growing, a native tree arboretum, an annual cornfield, and wild flower borders.
The Horticulture & Conservation Department is a partner of The Gardeners Guild, the UK’s leading trade network for qualified domestic maintenance gardeners.
