Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes designed around the needs of employers, which lead to nationally recognised qualifications. You can use Apprenticeships to train both new and existing employees.
Apprentices are employed from the word go and receive a wage and support from a company that is committed to their development.
Training takes place at work and at college. Apprentices can expect:
- Excellent training at one of the best vocational colleges
- A wage and supportive employer
- Real experience and understanding of the industry they are working in
- The opportunity to go on to university recognised industry-standard qualifications
Intermediate Apprenticeship
Apprentices will gain a Level 2 Competence Qualification, which will involve:
- Work-related qualifications at Level 2 relevant to the skills needed for the role. Work-related qualifications are achieved by assessing competence in the workplace
- Functional Skills, which are important for all kinds of work
- Technical certificates such as BTEC or City & Guilds qualifications which will embed the knowledge needed to do the job
- Practical experience in chosen field of work
Once completed, students can either work in their chosen field, or they can move onto an Advanced Apprenticeship.
Intermediate Apprenticeship
Apprentices will gain a Level 3 Competence Qualification, which will involve:
- Work-related qualifications at Level 3 (A Level standard), relevant to the skills you needed for the role. Work-related qualifications are achieved by assessing your competence in the workplace
- Functional Skills, which are important for all kinds of work
- Technical certificates such as BTEC or City & Guilds qualifications which will embed the knowledge needed to do the job
- Practical experience in chosen field of work
After completing the Advanced Apprenticeship, Apprentices have the option to progress onto a multi or highly skilled supervisory role and a role in professional management and move on to a Higher Apprenticeship.
Higher Apprenticeship
Apprentices will gain a Level 4 Competence Qualification, as well as functional Skills and, in some cases, a Foundation Degree.
Eligibility
Apprenticeships are open to all age groups above 16years-old whether just leaving school, been working for years or are seeking to start a new career. Applicants need to be living in England and not taking part in full-time education.
Wages
The National Minimum Wage for Apprenticeships is £2.60ph for apprentices aged under 19 and apprentices aged 19 or over in the first year of their Apprenticeship. £2.60 per hour applies to time working, plus time spent training that is part of the Apprenticeship.
However, the average weekly wage for an apprentice is £140-170pw. If an apprentice is on a higher wage, the employer must continue to pay that for the remainder of the training or until the apprentice becomes eligible for the full national minimum wage.
Evidence shows that those employers offering a higher than minimum wage level not only attract high quality candidates but are more likely to retain their Apprentice in the long term.
The Big Match
At Leeds City College, we make it simple for you to recruit and place Apprentices because we do most of the work for you. We understand recruitment can be time consuming, so we make sure the process of recruiting your Apprentices is quick and easy. The Big Match is Leeds City College’ very own recruitment service and our aim is to place the right candidate first time. We do this through a rigorous selection and assessment process meaning you only see those candidates that have been matched to your vacancy.
The process:
- Our team will visit you within 1 week of you submitting an enquiry to ascertain your requirements, talk you through the process and answer your questions;
- We will write a job description and advertise your role for a period of 4 weeks;
- During this time our experienced team will sift applications matching to the job description;
- Those successful at getting to the next stage will meet with Big Match team and carry out a skills test and interview;
- Those successful at this stage will be recommended to you for final interview.
The whole process will take no more than 1 month to complete and as we constantly assess candidates, in many cases we will be able to recommend candidates straight away (subject to suitability and availability).
If you are considering Apprenticeships for your existing staff, would like to recruit an Apprentice, or simply need further information, please contact Theresa Thomas on 0113 3861957 or email Theresa.thomas@leedscitycollege.ac.uk.
