Animal Care

Our specialist Animal Centre at the Horsforth Campus houses a host of animals for students to handle, from rabbits, mice and guinea pigs, to more exotic animals such as unusual fish, tarantulas, snakes and lizards… and we even have dog grooming facilities for pampered pooches!
Our courses include work experience and practical hands-on sessions with a range of animals including small companion animals and exotics at the Centre, and larger farm animals or birds of prey off-site.
Students have progressed onto a variety of successful careers in the Animal Care / Management industry. Animal welfare charities, kennel and cattery owners, pet shops, veterinary practices, specialist breeders, zoos, safari parks and animal shelters all recruit well qualified employees as animal keepers, kennel assistants, receptionists, animal nurses and sales assistants.
Trips off-site to relevant organisations or events are sometimes possible, and specialists within the animal management industry also visit the department to give talks and demonstrations on their field of expertise.
