Leeds City College set up stall in Briggate as staff and students pitched in to help the city celebrate its love of food.
The College, in partnership with Kirkgate Market, ran a mobile market stall for the day on Saturday (July 3) as part of this year’s Leeds Loves Food.
The stall showcased the diverse range of fresh, local produce on offer at the market as well as some of the delicious goods including artisan breads, pastries and chocolates, made on-site at the College’s Thomas Danby Campus. Crowds flocked to the stall to sample some of the goods on offer as well as taking recipes cards and goody bags, encouraging them to cook up some dishes at home.
The culinary talents of staff and students were also in the limelight, with cooking demonstrations in the specially erected Leeds Loves Food kitchen in Briggate.
Tutor Stephanie Moon, ably assisted by student Nathan Dorling, cooked up three mouth-watering dishes while her colleague Pete Higginson and student Jack Wright took on their counterparts from Bradford College in a special cook-off as part of the celebration of the forthcoming Yorkshire Cricket Mela. Each college team was challenged to create a dish using the same mystery bag of ingredients, with Radio Aire representatives and the audience voting the home team the overall winner. A return heat is going ahead on July 22 in Bradford.
In the neighbouring Victoria Quarter, Assistant Director Gordon Sibbald was the compere for various cooking demos and events as part of the four day festival.
Leeds Loves Food, a food lovers’ festival organised by Marketing Leeds and Leeds City Council in association with the Leeds Restaurant Association, promotes and raises awareness of the excellent range of restaurants in the city, as well as the quality and diversity of local food producers.
