A group of students, representing Leeds City College Thomas Danby Campus and Leeds United Ability Counts programme, put on a fine show of skills in a national 7-a-side FE Football tournament earlier this month.
The aim of the tournament, held at Manchester College, was to bring together college teams from across the UK, with all participating players having a recognised learning disability. Other teams which took part on the day included the likes of Chelsea, Wolves, Manchester United, Bolton, Celtic, Watford and Preston.
The College entered two student teams – a Championship team and a Premiership team. Both teams were drawn into two separate leagues and battled it out all day for a place in the knockout rounds.
The Championship team, captained by NVQ 1 Sport student James McKenna, made it through the final after a fantastic run, drawing 2 games and winning 3. They lost out to Celtic after unfortunately conceding their only goal of the tournament, losing 1-0 after a fantastic end-to-end game.
The Premiership team, captained by NVQ 2 Activity Leadership student Nick Redhead, also had a fantastic run in their league, drawing 3 and winning 5 of their games, before losing out in the semis on penalties.
The staff coaching team felt both teams should be proud of their efforts and be congratulated on their 13 collective clean sheets during the tournament. They did Leeds City College and Leeds United very proud.
