Two butchery students have proved they are top of the class by receiving national recognition for success in their studies.

Tom Exton and James Taylor-Garthwaite, who both completed courses with the College last year, were among the award winners at the Institute of Meat and Meat Training Council’s annual Prizegiving Ceremony Luncheon, held at The Worshipful Company of Butchers’ Butchers Hall in London.

Tom, 19, received the top award – The Worshipful Company of Butchers’ Perpetual Cup for Outstanding Achievement – for getting top marks (7 distinctions and 1 pass) in the Advanced Certificate in Meat Technology and Poultry Level 3, which he studied for at the College’s Thomas Danby Campus.

Fellow former student James, 19, received The Worshipful Company of Poulters’ Award for getting top marks (5 distinctions and 3 credits) in the Advanced Certificate in Meat Technology and Poultry Level 2.

Tom has since gone on to study a Foundation Degree at Manchester University while James is working in the family business – at a quality pork butchers.

Meat Technology tutor Chris Moorby said: “We are very proud of our students and their achievements and to see that Leeds City College remains at the forefront of meat technology training and education in the UK.
