A chef tutor at Leeds City College is hoping to serve up a winning menu when she competes for the title of ‘Chef of the Year’.

Stephanie Moon, who works part-time at the College’s Thomas Danby Campus, is one of the 10 finalists in the British Culinary Federation ‘Chef of the Year’, being held at Hotel Olympia in London on Monday (March 1st).

And she will be joined in the kitchen by one of her students Jack Wright, who will be working as her commis chef for the day.

Steph, 40, has to cook a starter, a main course using English lamb, and a dessert and is planning on putting all Yorkshire ingredients on her menu, with everything sourced from the region including Yorkshire trout and rhubarb from Wakefield.

Steph joined the College last year after eight years as Executive Chef at Rudding Park, in Harrogate, where she still works as consultant chef.

During her culinary career, she was named Yorkshire Life Chef of the Year (2004/2005) and has cooked for many famous people including George Bush Snr, Michael Gorbachev, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and John Cleese.

She is now enjoying her time teaching budding young chefs of the future:

It is great to help teach the head chefs of tomorrow at the College, which has an established reputation within the industry for delivering a great culinary education.

Jack, 17, started cooking at the College when he was 15, attending its Junior Chefs Academy, and is now studying on a Level 3 Professional Cookery course.

Competing at this level is a great opportunity for both myself and Jack” said Steph. “It will be a challenging competition but we are looking forward to it.
