Star centre calls upon young artists to celebrate hero17 September 2012 | news archive
The STAR Centre, the science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) hub at Leeds City College’s Keighley Campus, is calling upon primary school pupils to explore the furthest reaches of their imaginations and create a banner in honour of Neil Armstrong.
The design is to recognise Neil Armstrong’s successful moon landing on July 21, 1969, and the impact this incredible event has had on history.
The winning pupil will see their design made into a rollup banner and used by the STAR Centre for visitors and students to see.
In addition, the winning school will receive a free visit to the STAR Centre. They will have the opportunity to dress up as astronauts and explore the centre’s planetary surface alongside the opportunity to be mission controllers and experience the wonders of the universe in the STAR Centre’s Cosmodome.
The STAR Centre uses space to enthuse young people into science, technology, engineering and maths. A major part of this is the achievements of space exploration both human and robotic.
Rebecca Thorpe, STAR Centre Curriculum Leader, said: “The moon landings were the pinnacle of technological progress at the time. We would like to honour Neil Armstrong because Neil himself humbly acknowledged that he was just the figurehead of the achievement of the Apollo missions.
“He will forever be remembered as the first man on the moon, yet the space program had taken six million, seven hundred and fifty thousand man years of work. It is this element of working together that the STAR Centre promotes. The centre inspires visitors to be curious about their world and subsequent universe and to play their part within it.”
Keighley organisation Sign and Design, will be providing the pop up banner. The template is available to download at www.starcentre.org.
All competition entries should be sent to Rebecca no later than Friday November 30. Please post entries to Rebecca Thorpe, Neil Armstrong Competition, Leeds City College, Bradford Road, Keighley, BD21 4HQ.
