Leeds City College Celebrates GCSE Results

23 August 2012 | news archive

Leeds City College is today celebrating the success of its GCSE students.
Science and Maths subjects have improved pass rates, with A-C grades achieved by 88% of students studying Maths GCSE Higher Tier and 75% of students studying GCSE Additional Science.

One of the top achievers was Danny Sherras, 24, who had returned to education to study an Access Foundation course. Danny achieved two A*s and three As in GCSE Additional Science, Core Science, English, English Literature and Mathematics.

Since leaving school with few qualifications, Danny has worked full time at his father’s carpet fitting business, but realised he needed qualifications to get ahead.

“I decided I wanted to become an airline pilot, but it’s really competitive and you need additional qualifications to stand out. I left school with very little, and this is my third attempt at studying GCSE subjects. I’ve found it difficult in the past to balance work and my studies, and have had to drop out twice owing to my other commitments.

“This time I approached it differently, working at the weekends at my Dad’s business, and fitting carpets around class timetables. College have been great and really adaptable. Their flexibility has enabled me to arrange work around classes in the morning and afternoons.

“I’m really pleased with my results – they were much better than I expected as the exams were really hard! I want to stay on at Leeds City College and study the Applied Sciences A Levels and continue towards my goal of becoming a pilot.”

Sandra Reston, Curriculum Area Manager for the Access Foundation courses and Danny’s English tutor, said:
“I am thrilled for Danny. He has been totally committed but very modest about what he has achieved. Not only had Danny studied at College and done extremely well, this was all alongside working a 40 hour week! Danny is a brilliant role model and was a delight to teach.”
