Students Volunteer at Local Torch Party
A group of students from Leeds City College’s Enfield Centre went to Banstead Park in Harehills on Sunday 24th to join a huge community party celebrating the Olympic Torch Relay arriving in the area later that evening.
A number of Entry 2 and Entry 3 students volunteered their time to help with the organising of the event.
Students helped Fresh FM to put up their marquee and then spent the afternoon running relay races and a 5 a-side tournament. The extra help was welcomed by the event organisers who said: “The young people from the College proved to be real assets in running this event. If we do any more events we’ll be in touch so they can help again!” The young people enjoyed themselves and received t-shirts and some good memories.
At around six o’clock the group headed up to Harehills Lane and found a good spot to catch the Olympic Torchbearer as they passed by.
Tutor Mike Richmond-Coggin, who co-ordinated the student involvement, said: “There was a wonderful atmosphere as the community came together to celebrate the Torch passing through Harehills. We were there early so we got to see the waiting Torchbearer and have some photos with him. The Olympic Torch arrived right on schedule and the crowds cheered and clapped.”
He added: “Finally it was time to head home but all involved will have fond memories for many years to come.”
