About the course

You will study a variety of subjects relating to a career in the animal care industry. This course allows for progression into Higher Education programmes. Career opportunities after completion of the course may be in Veterinary Nursing, Animal Welfare, Animal Nutrition, Animal Training, Pet Retail, Animal Collection work such as safari park/zoo keeper, or Kennel and Cattery work.

The Animal centre
This new facility houses a range of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish and invertebrates. During the course you will develop and apply practical skills in animal handling and husbandry through regular practical sessions in the centre. It will enable learners to adopt safe working practices and develop a confident and adaptable approach to animals.

The Farm
During the course the students will be working alongside farm animals and will gain animal handling and husbandry experience of farm animals. It provides the knowledge and skills required for both handling and day to day management of farm livestock.

The course is taught through theory and practically based sessions and students will have to successfully complete a 7 week work experience block during the 2 years of study.

Assessment

The BTEC National Diploma in Animal Management is a nationally recognised qualification equivalent to 3 ‘A’ levels. Students are assessed using a variety of assessment methods, allowing students to demonstrate practical competences and theoretical knowledge.

Qualifications needed to start

4 GCSEs including Science, Maths & English at Grade C or above or a BTEC First Diploma in Animal Care with Merits and Distinctions in all subjects.

Substantial animal-related experience would be taken into consideration.

What’s next

Students who achieve good grades could go on to study in Higher Education including Foundation degrees in Animal Health & Welfare or Zoology, Marine Biology or Ecology. Alternatively students could enter into work within the Animal Care Industry.
