About the course

This course qualifies you as a Fitness Instructor and is particularly relevant for individuals interested in working in the fitness industry. The qualification is fully recognised by the industry’s body REPs (the Register of Exercise Professionals) and is the foundation qualification for Fitness Professionals. The course includes a mandatory work placement in an appropriate gym facility agreed by the college.

What will I learn?

  • Principles of exercise, fitness and health
  • Promote health, safety and welfare in active leisure and recreation

What skills will I develop?

Improve and develop vocational skills as an exercise professional. Gain REPs Level 2 status as a Personal Trainer.

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed via a variety of assessment methods including: coursework, case studies, practical assessments, multiple choice examinations, professional discussions and work-based assessments.

What are the entry requirements?

Candidates must have at least 1 GCSE at grade C and 3 GCSEs at grade D (or equivalent).

Future opportunities

Completing the NVQ Level 2 Instructing Exercise and Fitness qualification provides knowledge, understanding and skills in the profession of fitness instructing and carries REPs 2 status. This will enable you to work as a fully qualified Fitness Instructor.

Case studies

Many of our Level 2 instructors go straight into employment within the industry and often then progress onto higher levels within the industry, becoming Personal Trainers or Gym Managers.

Aimee completed the course on June 2011. She completed her work placement at Leeds University’s ‘the Edge’ gym. She was then offered an instructor’s job with Virgin Active. She now works at both Virgin Active and the Edge and is currently studying for her Personal Trainers qualification at Leeds City College.

Ben completed the course in 2010 and started work as a Fitness Instructor supervising sessions at a number of Leeds City College campuses. Ben runs classes and supervises gym sessions too. He is also currently studying at Leeds City College to attain the Level 3 Personal Trainers qualification.

About the tutors

Henry Sharp – Henry is the tutor responsible for running the Sport and Recreation courses. He has worked in a number of Leisure and Sports Centres and is supported by a team of fully qualified tutors.

Rob Owen – Rob has exceptional experience in both Fitness, Coaching and Sports Management and has a fully qualified sports team to support him.

Lee Chapman – Lee worked as a Personal Trainer in a famous health farm in Surrey, where he got to experience working with many different types of people. As well as working with clients individually, he used to run up to three different exercise classes a day, including aqua, spin and body pump. Later he worked leading sport and exercise classes in different hotels on the Spanish island of Majorca. Lee has a degree in Exercise and Sports Science from Essex University, and is currently teaching BTEC Sport as well as Fitness Instruction at Leeds City College.

Wendy Goodall – After completing several Level 2 & 3 courses in Sport, Gym Instructing and Personal Training, Wendy completed an FdSc in Health Related Exercise and Fitness. Wendy made the decision to become a teacher and completed her teaching qualification. She is also a qualified NVQ Assessor and Internal Verifier.

Wendy teaches across a range of Level 2 to Level 3 courses including Public Services, Fitness Instructing, Sport and NVQ programmes. Wendy’s specialities are anatomy and physiology, nutrition, fitness testing and training.

Wendy enjoys her other occupation as a Personal Trainer as it gives her the opportunity to enhance her knowledge and own fitness to an acceptable standard. Wendy enjoys training and is a keen runner who has completed several half-marathons in the past few years.
