About the course
The start date for the diploma is September, but there are various start dates throughout the year for the award and certificate, depending on the modules you select. There is a series of workshops providing underpinning knowledge and skills, together with personal tutorials where your own needs are identified, your progress is accredited and a personal learning programme arranged with you.
There are no limits to the time it takes you to gain the qualification, although you should be aiming to complete the Award in 3 months, the certificate in 6 months and the Diploma in 12 -15 months. You may be charged additional fees if you have not completed the qualification after 18 months.
Special start dates, programmes and attendance patterns can be arranged for employers who wish to arrange management training for groups of employees.
Workshops are offered weekly at our Park Lane Campus and tutorials will be held by agreement with the course tutor.
What and how do you learn?
This is one of a series of new progressive management qualifications designed by the Chartered Management Institute. The qualification is intended for the current or aspiring senior manager who has the authority and personal inspiration to translate organisational strategy into effective operational performance.
It requires the manager to build on their management skills and to focus on the requirements of developing and implementing the organisation’s strategy.
Whilst studying for a CMI qualification you have membership of the CMI and on-line access to Europe’s largest database on management information, research, and best practise, as well as video’s, podcasts,articles and books to support your studies.
The qualification consists of 14 units and the credit framework provides you with more choice and flexibility, enabling you to select a series of units to build a qualification that meets your individual needs. Other CMI Options may be available, subject to sufficient student demand and Tutor availability
The 14 units are:
Group A :
- Personal development - 6 credits
- Strategic performance management - 7 credits
- Financial management - 7 credits
- Strategic information management – 9 credits
- Conducting a strategic project – 10 credits
- Organisational direction - 9 credits
Group B:
- Financial planning - 6 credits
- Strategic Marketing - 6 credits
- Strategic project management - 6 credits
- Organisational change – 7 credits
- Strategic planning - 9 credits
- Human resource planning - 8 credits
- Being a strategic leader - 7 credits
- Strategic leadership practice - 7 credits
For the Award you will need to complete any combination of units to a minimum of 6 credits.
For the Certificate you will need to complete any combination of units to a minimum of 13 credits.
For the Diploma you will need to complete all core units (group A) and 3 optional units from group B totaling at least 66 credits.

Award: £180 + £100 CMI membership
Certificate: £540 + £152 CMI membership
Diploma: £1530 + £219 CMI membership
Qualifications/experience required to start
The programme is open to current and aspiring senior managers, but no formal qualifications are required. Normal minimum age on entry is 23.You must demonstrate at least 5 years experience in a senior management position or progress from the level 5 programme.
After the course
Most people work for the qualification because it further develops their strategic leadership skills and in many cases leads to further career progression. Some large employers train all of their managers through the CMI programme and you can progress through onto a top-up MBA through Leeds Metropolitan University. Other Universities may also accept the CMI L7 Diploma to support entry onto their MBA programmes
