About the course

This is one of a series of new progressive management qualifications designed by the Chartered Management Institute.

This qualification is aimed at current and aspiring middle managers. It represents a step change from the Level 3 First Line Management in that it requires the manager to develop the core management skills of personal development, resource management, understanding stakeholder, customer and quality requirements, information management, project management and performance management

Whilst studying for a CMI qualification you have membership of the CMI and on-line access to Europe’s largest database on management information, research, and best practise, as well as video’s, pod casts, articles and books to support your studies.

The qualification consists of 13 units and the credit framework provides you with more choice and flexibility, enabling you to select a series of units to build a qualification that meets your individual needs. Other CMI Options may be available, subject to sufficient student demand and tutor availability.

For the award, you will be expected to attend for 3-4 weeks, for the certificate, you will be expected to attend for approximately 7-10 weeks, and for the diploma, you will need to attend for 32 weeks

There are no limits to the time it takes you to gain the qualification, although you should be aiming to complete the Award in 3 months, the certificate in 6 months and the Diploma in 12 months. You may be charged additional fees if you have not completed the qualification after 18 months.

Special start dates, programmes and attendance patterns can be arranged for employers who wish to arrange management training for groups of employees.

What and how do you learn?

The 13 units are:
Group A:

  • 1.  Personal development - 6 credits
  • 2.  Information based decision making - 7 credits
  • 4.  Resource management - 7 credits
  • 5.  Meeting stakeholders and quality needs - 6 credits
  • 6.  Conducting a management project – 10 credits

Group B6:

  • 3.  Performance management - 9 credits
  • 12. Being a leader - 7 credits

Group C:

  • 7. Financial control - 9 credits
  • 8.  Marketing planning - 9 credits
  • 9.  Project development and control -  6 credits
  • 10.  Human resource development – 6 credits
  • 11. Managing recruitment and selection - 7 credits
  • 13.  Leadership practice  -  7 credits

For the Award, you will need to complete any combination of units to a minimum of 6 credits. (Minimum 1 unit)

For the Certificate , you will need to complete any combination of units to a minimum of 13 credits( Minimum 2/3 units )

For the Diploma, you will need to complete all the units form group A , at least one until from group B and 3 options from group C to a total of at least 62 credits. (Minimum 9 units).

Course Fees

Award: £150 + £90 CMI membership
Certificate: £450 + £132 CMI membership
Diploma: £1290 + £181 CMI membership

Qualifications/experience required to start

No formal qualifications are required but work experience is recommended. Normal minimum age on entry is 21. If you are in doubt about your qualifications and experience to start the programme, please contact us for advice. Whatever your qualifications, it is important that you have the support and co-operation of your employer.

After the course

Most people work for the qualification because it helps them to be better managers and for many it leads to promotion. Some large employers train all of their managers through the CMI programme and you can, in time, progress through the CMI qualification route to an MBA programme.
