Course Code: 13544

What and how do you learn?

This course aims to help you develop your artistic talents and interests and your capacity for creative thought and action.

You learn how to apply the basic artistic elements of line, shape, colour, texture etc. in a variety of contexts but the main emphasis is on painting, drawing and printmaking. Students work from direct observation in formally taught sessions and you also develop individual projects independently, experimenting with a range of materials.

You study the work of other artists and designers which involves occasional visits to art galleries and museums.

You record your processes and your researches in sketch books, note books and supporting project folders.

AS Art is an academic subject which involves a high level of written analysis about a wide selection of artist’s work. You will also write and analyse your coursework projects on a weekly basis and you must be prepared to complete homework each week.

Students must pass at least 2 AS modules at Grade D or above to be considered for A2.

You have to provide basic materials; two A3 sketchbooks plus basic art materials, pencils, glue stick and craft knife. You will also have to buy colour photocopies to illustrate your journals.

Qualifications required to start

Students must have GCSE English Language grade C. Full details of our entry requirements for A levels as a full-time programme of study can be found here.

You should bring visual evidence of painting and drawing for the first tutorial in the course induction.

You complete two units of work for ‘AS’ Level and two units for a full ‘A’ Level. Each unit is internally marked and externally moderated. Units 2 and 4 include timed examinations.

About the tutor

The course is delivered by an experienced teacher who has an BA Hons in Fine Art. She has been teaching art and graphics for 25 years and her aim is to enable students to learn new skills in a pleasant and informative environment.

After the course

The qualification can lead to full-time specialist courses in art and design such as Higher National Diploma and Pre-BA leading to degree level. Several past students are currently studying on local Foundation courses and degree courses.

AS Art goes well with most subjects particularly the more creative subjects such as Media and Photography. Combined with other ‘A’ Levels the qualification can also lead to university entrance in other subjects.
