What will I learn?
AS Level
Practical Skills:
You will develop contemporary dance technique through regular classes. You will develop choreographic skills to enable you to choreograph and perform your own solo piece. Performance and interpretative skills will be developed through a performance of a taught duet
Theoretical skills:
To underpin your practical learning you will study the demands made in practice and performance on the dancer. You will also study choreographic techniques through analysis of professional dance works.
A2 Level
Practical skills:
You will develop your choreographic skills taught in AS and apply them to a piece of your own group choreography. Your performance and interpretative skills will be developed through a taught solo dance based on a practitioner from 1965-1985.
Theoretical skills:
You will study specifically modern dance in Britain 1965-1985, which will support your learning of the solo piece. You will also study one professional dance work in depth which is selected by the examination board.
How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed in a variety of different ways:
AS Level:
Practical exam (60% of total AS marks, 30% of total A Level marks) including solo choreography and performance in a duo.
Written exam (40% of total AS marks, 20% of total A Level marks).
A2 Level:
Practical exam (25% of total A Level marks) including group choreography and solo performance.
Written exam (25% of total A Level marks).
Commitment, enthusiasm and a genuine interest in dance are the main ingredients for success on this course. It will be necessary for you to study outside of the class times. AS Dance is an academic subject which involves a high level of written analysis about a selection of choreographic works. You will also have analyse and document your own choreography and research on a weekly basis. Students must pass at least 2 AS modules at Grade E or above to be considered for A2
What are the entry requirements?
To study A-levels full-time with us students must satisfy our standard entry requirements, plus the specific grades required for each individual A-level. Therefore, to take this course as part of a full-time programme of study, students are required to:
and within these requirements have the following grades required specifically for the dance A-level course:
- English language – GCSE grade C or above
- Dance – GCSE grade C (if taken)
Future Opportunities
Success in this course could lead on to further dance training, HE level or employment.
Part-time AS / A Levels
Part-time start dates: Courses start the week commencing Monday 12th September 2011.
Part-time session times:
Session times:
AS Level: 17:00-19:30 – Tuesday or 16:15-18:15 – Thursday
A2 Level: 17:00-20:00 – Thursday
Part-time fees: £580 + £10 registration / year
All AS evening courses require full payment by you for tuition and exam fees. The total cost for any one of our AS evening courses is £580 + £10 registration fee. There is an option to pay by instalments which requires a 25% deposit on the day of enrolment then a payment plan will be arranged with you.
Part-time Dance AS/A Level entry requirements:
- English language – GCSE grade C or above
- Dance – GCSE grade C (if taken)
In order to be able to enrol you must meet these entry requirements. You will need to bring evidence that you can meet the entry requirements to enrolment.

Part-time enrolment:
Enrolment for part-time A levels will begin from 9:30am on Tuesday 6th September.
Places are limited and will be given on a first come first served basis. It is advisable to arrive early for enrolment on evening subjects to avoid disappointment.
