About the course
As the demand on global business expands the need for network engineers with excellent professional, technical and communication skills has increased dramatically. There is a shortage of technical professionals, which in turn will impact on the demands of business being able to exchange data on a global scale.
Technical professionals are needed to maintain the infrastructure of hardware network devices and systems. This award will develop your specialism in the technologies that underpin the Internet, Intranets and other computer-based information networks. The course also develops technical skills using networking equipment, different network operating systems and network security.
What and how do you learn?
The FdSc in Applied Networking comprises 16 modules consisting of :
Personal Professional Development 1-4
These modules develop your personal attributes and your individual learning plan.
Work Related Learning 1-4
Develop your understanding of the workplace as well as your project management skills.
Cisco CCNA Exploration 1-4
Follows the Cisco syllabus developing your knowledge and skills using networking equipment.
Linux
Develops knowledge and skills around the Linux OS utilising the CLI commands.
Network Design
Teaches the fundamentals of network design.
Network Security
Examines the vulnerabilities of networks and how to employ the countermeasures.
Server Operating Systems
Develops knowledge and skills of Microsoft server operating systems.
What are the entry requirements?
This course has minimum entry requirements of 1 x E in a relevant A level or a pass in BTEC National Diploma/Certificate or another vocational level 3 qualification, together with a GCSE at grade C in English. However, candidates receiving this minimum offer would need to demonstrate experience in and commitment to their chosen Foundation Degree subject.
A typical offer is likely to be 2 x D at A level, or a Merit profile in a relevant BTEC National Diploma/Certificate, together with a number of GCSE grades at C or above including English.
International qualifications will be assessed against these criteria. Speakers of other languages need to have an IELTS score of at least 6.0 or a recognised level 2 English qualification.
We welcome applications from mature candidates who may not have met the academic criteria, but can demonstrate a wealth of experience in their chosen field. Candidates in this category are likely to be interviewed to assess their suitability for the course and asked to provide a portfolio of evidence to support their application.
All students must be able to demonstrate either by qualifications or testing that they have the required literacy skills to complete the course.
All students need also to be aware that it may be a requirement of progression onto a top up degree that they have both English and Maths at GCSE grade C. Students who do not have these qualifications have the opportunity to gain them whilst at college.
After the course
You can apply to study the top up BSc (Hons) Applied Computing with Leeds City College (validated by Leeds Metropolitan University). You can also apply to Leeds Metropolitan University or other Universities to do top up degrees in a computer related area or progress onto a related career path.
