About the course
The Diploma is a one year full-time programme which is recognised by universities as an alternative to “A” levels for entry to many degree courses. This diploma route is relevant for those wishing to undertake degrees in Science, Engineering and Technology.
What will I learn?
The Diploma is divided into units grouped into subject areas for each of which you can gain credits. All units are class based and learning is facilitated by formal lectures, practical group work and ICT interaction. You choose two subject strands, each of which contains a number of separately assessed units:
Biology
- Molecules and cells.
- Genetics, evolution and diversity.
- Ecology and the environment.
Chemistry
- Atomic structure, moles and periodicity.
- Fundamentals of physical chemistry.
- Energy and equilibria.
- Rings and chains – organic chemistry.
Mathematics
- Pure mathematics 1.
- Pure mathematics 2.
- Statistics 1.
- Statistics 2.
- Mechanics (semester 2 only)
Physics
- Mathematical models in physics.
- Heat and waves in physics.
- Electricity and magnetism.
- Particle physics.
All students must also attend and complete the mandatory core study skills units:
- Researching and understanding opportunities for study in Higher Education.
- Research skills.
- Presentation skills.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment includes coursework and/or examination in two semesters over the year. Some units may include presentations or practical assessments.
All work is internally moderated and externally moderated by assessors from the awarding body OCN.
Skills you will develop
You will develop the academic skills, knowledge and understanding to enable you to progress to University and pursue a professional career of your choice.
What are the entry requirements?
You must be 19 years of age by 1st September in the year the course starts.
Formal qualifications are not always required but you must be able to show by your application and interview that you are able to benefit from studying at Level 3 (“A” level standard). You should have a level 2 (GCSE equivalent) science qualification or equivalent vocational experience. You need to have a good standard of written English and all applicants will be required to take a written assessment.
You need to have a good standard of numeracy and all applicants will be required to take a numeracy assessment. It is desirable that you will have attained a Level 2 qualification in English and maths, GCSE grade C or equivalent, prior to entry on the Access Diploma as these subjects are generally required for degree entry.
Future Opportunities
The Access to HE Diploma is designed and accepted for entry to many HE courses both locally and nationally. Fortunately, we have one of the best Universities here in Leeds. All the local universities welcome our access students. We have close links with the Universities of Bradford, Huddersfield, Leeds, and Leeds Metropolitan University who support the aims and objectives of the access diploma and increased participation for adult students.
Students completing the course apply to a variety of science-related degree courses including physiotherapy, civil engineering, radiography, pharmacy, and midwifery. Students do not have to restrict themselves to local universities. They are encouraged to pick the courses best suited to their situations, needs and interests.
